The Clio

2003 Renault Clio 172 Sport (Fully Loaded) Mk2

I bought this 2003 Renault Clio 172 Sport in 2009 with around 60K miles on the clock, since then its completed over 200K and has been driven across more than 11 countries. It has been in its fair share of minor accidents and close shaves, including cam belt failure and other possible terminal faults. It's driven various race tracks and if you have owned a Clio Sport of any kind you will know they are drivers cars and but come with some frustrating issues.

Misadventure

When things don't go to plan

Ownership of the Clio has included a chaotic catalogue of automotive misadventures that tested both driver resilience and mechanical survival. The ordeal began the morning after purchase when the cambelt snapped upon startup, miraculously leaving the engine undamaged but requiring an immediate flatbed tow to specialists for a total overhaul. Trust was shattered again during a routine MOT at a rogue Romsey garage, where a mechanic took the car on a reckless, unauthorised joyride that bounced the engine off the rev limiter, all captured on dash camera. The physical pinnacle of these terrors occurred on the M27, when an oblivious HGV caught the compact hot hatch in its blind spot, shunting it helplessly down the slow lane and up a slip road. Yet, from catastrophic failures to garage betrayals and motorway collisions, the resilient little Renault survived every setback, requiring only minor repairs to fight another day.

Not Just Road Trips

The Clio has attended various dedicated Renault Clio events and French car meets. The car even holds a unique piece of history, having won an official prize directly from Renault for the "Best Photo of a Car in a Location." This recognition highlights the car's photogenic appeal, proving that the iconic lines of the Phase 2 look just as stunning framed in a scenic backdrop as they do sitting on a race circuit.
